This song is the fifth track of An Gordonach!’s EP “Spear-carriers”, released in February 2025. Spear-carriers is a celebration of different overlooked characters in folk tale, literature, and myth through alternative music. This song is inspired by the character Miles Teg in Frank Herbert’s book “Heretics of Dune”. Duncan Idaho is clearly the most important character (as gholas!) in the second Dune trilogy; however, we were struck by the tenacity of Supreme Bashar Miles Teg. He is a grizzled master-strategist and warrior aligned to the Bene Gesserit who allows the protagonist to continue his journey. Therefore, he fits the title of “spear-carrier” perfectly. This song relates the sequence at the end of “Heretics of Dune” from Miles’s perspective, from when he is being tortured by a T-Probe to the end of the book. The extreme pain awakes heightened physical and mental abilities which allow him to kill his interrogators and escape. He mobilises former veterans and Bene Gesserit forces to engage the Honoured Matres in battle, creating a diversion on Rakis (Arrakis/Dune) from which there was no escape, but which allows Duncan Idaho and Reverend Mother Lucilla to evade capture. The song finishes with the Litany Against Fear to portray his dignified acceptance of death and a major chord to signify the success of his mission and sacrifice. (Luckily he returns as a ghola in “Chapterhouse: Dune”.) Enjoy! I will face my fear I will permit it to pass over me and through me And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
