History and Song Index Chet Atkins and Merle Travis were Lenny Breau's original guitar mentors and idols and beginning the age of twelve Lenny spent countless hours learning their techniques and repertoire. In his mid to late teens, he performed this material on stage with his father's band when he was given the spotlight to play a few solo tunes. He also loved playing these songs for friends at social gatherings or informal concerts. Fortunately, many of these performances were recorded by his friends and fans because they show Lenny's absolute mastery of the Atkins/Travis fingerstyle playing at a very young age. The exact origin and date of most of these recordings is unknown but they were recorded between 1957 and 1960 in or around Winnipeg. The identities of the musicians playing with Lenny on some of these recordings are unknown. Photo by Owen Clark--(Lenny Breau at Rainbow Gardens in Winnipeg with his father's band 1957) 1.
