We explore an extremely important but often over looked group of soil organisms in the Canadian Prairies, nematodes. The services nematodes provide and their biology and life cycles will be introduced. Then nematode pests of the Prairies that our laboratory has researched will be detailed. We will learn about the Stem and Bulb Nematode of Creeping Thistle and how it was confused with a close relative that damages field pea, the root lesion nematode that parasitizes soybean, chickpea and canola, and the soybean cyst nematode that needs to be managed in Manitoba. Our efforts to relate nematodes to the mysterious chickpea disease will be presented. Speaker: Dr. Mario Tenuta is the Chair for Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF), and Fertilizer Canada Senior Industrial Research in 4R Nutrient Stewardship and Professor of Applied Soil Ecology at the University of Manitoba. His training includes a B.Sc. in Botany and Physical Geography, an M.Sc. in Soil Fertility, a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, and Post-Doctoral research in Nematology. The Applied Soil Ecology Laboratory conducts surveys and research to track the establishment and importance of nematode pests in field crops and potatoes in the Prairies. Current research includes the root lesion nematode and stem nematode of pulse crops and the soybean cyst nematode.
