Established in 1872, East London lies on the South-East coast of South Africa, and received its city status in 1914. Today it forms part of a larger area known as Buffalo City, which includes East London, Mdantsane, King Williams Town, Zwelitsha, Berlin and Dimbaza. The area is better known in isiXhosa as "Emonti". As a result of the economic benefits a city offers, East London attracted many people from rural settlements in the Eastern Cape Province who migrated to the budding urban area in search of work and a better future for their families. However under Apartheid legislations such as the Group Areas Act of 1950, these native people were then forcefully moved to designated areas according to their racial group. These areas became known as townships. Buffalo City's townships comprise of Gompo Town, Buffalo Flats, Scenery Park, Mdantsane, Potsdam, Berlin, Zwelitsha, King Williams Town, Ginsberg and Dimbaza. Remarkably from its inception in 1963, Mdantsane became the second largest township in South Africa in terms of the geographical area it occupies. Today Mdantsane is rich in heritage and portrays an array of colour contrasts, lifestyles and experiences. Amongst others, main features include the Highway Taxi Rank; Sisa Dukashe Stadium; many informal traders and crafters; memorial sites; Mdantsane City Mall; Cecilia Makiwane hospital; Bridle Drift Dam; various taverns; the infamous chiza nyama; boxing; soccer; shopping; events and township accommodation. Come experience the heritage and lifestyle experienced by great boxing names of the past, such as Nkosana Mgxaji "Happy Boy"; Ludumo Galada; Welcome Ncita "The Hawk" and Vuyani Bungu "The Beast".
