Inside of the concentration camps established within The Third Reich, there were many horrific SS guards who inflicted great violence and evil onto the prisoners. Many of these were women and after the Second World War a number were brought to trial and were sentenced to death, being executed for crimes against humanity. But one of the worst and most evil female guards who worked at Auschwitz Birkenau was Maria Mandl, who became known as 'The Beast' for her brutality. She was responsible it was claimed at her trial that she oversaw the deaths of 500,000 people at the camp. There were many eyewitnesses who told of Mandl's brutality, and she was known for overseeing executions in the women's camp, and also she was seen beating prisoners to death with her bare hands. She would take part in the selections on the ramps when the trains arrived at Auschwitz, and would send thousands of people to the gas chambers. Further stories emerged of Mandl's evil treatment, and she was involved in training other female guards such as Irma Grese and Elisabeth Volkenrath, and she would school these in how to violently carry out a reign of terror inside of the camps.
