What does the bible say about anxiety? Jesus said “do not be anxious” 3x in Matthew 6. In Philippians 4:6 the Apostle Paul said “Do not be anxious about anything” What’s interesting is the Greek word merimna that we translate “anxiety” literally means “concern”. In 1 Corinthians 12:25 Paul uses it to describe the kind of care Christians are supposed to have for one another. There is a good and godly kind of concern. In Philippians 2:20 Paul says that he has no ministry partner like Timothy because Timothy is genuinely concerned for the people at the church in Philippi. That’s the Greek word we translate anxiety. There is a righteous kind of concern. So what’s the difference between godly concern and sinful anxiety? It’s simple. How do you respond when you feel concerned? Because we all have anxieties about the present and the future. Two options… 1, Fear. Sit in worry. In that moment, we start living like God isn’t good or trustworthy—even if we’d never say that out loud. 2, Faith. You choose to trust God. You call to mind His character. He is good. He loves you. He’s in control. He’s actively working all things for His glory and our good. You call to mind His promises. He will never leave you. He will provide for all of your needs. He establishes your steps in life. The best thing to do when you feel concerned is pray. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “cast all your anxieties on the Lord, because He cares for you.” Your Father cares for you. So take your cares to Him and let Him carry the weight of them for you.
