Warner Oland returns as Charlie Chan, Chinese-American detective, in the eighth film in the 20th Century Fox mystery series. Plot (Google): Chan travels to Egypt, where he finds a fresh corpse in an ancient sarcophagus. Review (DVD talk): "...a strong film from start to finish. The cast are all quite good.... The sets are great, there's some nice, macabre atmosphere... and... Chan has some witty, clever dialogue." – Ian Jane https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/22372 From a racial standpoint, "in Egypt" is perhaps the most dated and problematic of all the Chan films. This time, viewers don't just have the usual challenge of accepting a Caucasian actor playing a Chinese detective, we also get none other than Stepin Fetchit as comedy relief. Fetchit (aka Lincoln Perry) was a very popular pre-Civil Rights African-American comic actor who found acceptance among white audiences of the day by adopting a silly name and a demeaning, stereotyped persona. In "Charlie Chan in Egypt," Fetchit slurs his words, is lazy, easily frightened, quick to pull out a straight-razor in a fight, and isn't even allowed the dignity of a normal character name, instead getting one better suited to a pet (he's called "Snowshoes"). Needless to say, he's too frivolous a presence in the proceedings to even be considered a suspect. It's all very cringe-worthy, and this is hardly the first Chan film to indulge in such shenanigans (in the earliest extant movie, "The Black Camel," -- • The Black Camel (1931) w/ subtitles -- Chan has a Japanese assistant who must be seen to be believed), but it's arguably the most overt. To his credit, Perry/Fetchit was a talented performer who played this kind of character well, but modern viewers would be best advised to know what to expect going in. Also appearing in a small part here is teenaged actress Rita Cansino, playing an Egyptian girl. Within the next two years, Cansino would dye her hair ginger, undergo electrolysis treatments to have her hairline start farther back on her scalp, and find fame playing less "exotic" types under her new name, "Rita Hayworth."
