In my sophomore year at Susquehanna University, I came across an intriguing story about a guy from my hometown named Stanley Coveleski. Like most boys in the Shamokin area during the early 1900’s, Stan grew up working in the coal mines as a breaker boy at just twelve years old. He worked from seven in the morning to seven at night, six days a week for $3.75 per week. Although Coveleski did not have much time outside the mines, he had a habit of throwing rocks at tin cans. Over time, his accuracy began to improve and he quickly realized that the game of baseball would be his way out of a life in the mines. After a few years in the minor leagues, Stan eventually rose to the top of the baseball world. Coveleski’s pin point control and effective spitball would help him land a spot in the rotation for the Cleveland Indians in 1916. Even though 1920 would prove to be one of the best seasons on the mound for Stan, he experienced two tragedies in the same year. His wife of seven years passed away unexpectedly in May, while his own teammate died as a result of a pitched ball straight to the head later in the season. Despite the hardships he experienced, Stan was able to pitch through the pain. Coveleski would ultimately win the World Series with the Indians in 1920. The hard work and triumph of Stan really caught my attention when doing initial research. I also realized a very small amount of people in Shamokin still know Stan’s story, and I wanted to be able to keep his legacy alive. Please Like, Share, and enjoy the story of Stan Coveleski!
