In this episode of Vinyl Vibes, Jack is joined by Nancy Nevins, the lead singer of Sweetwater. Nancy got into singing and music at a young age when she realised she had a good voice. In 1967 she heard a group called Jay Walker and The Pedestriansplaying in a coffeeshop window and she started singing with them what would become the groups most known song, a rendition of traditional song "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child". She was asked to join the group and in June 1967 the group would change its name to Sweetwater after going to the Monterey International Pop Festival. Throughout 1968 the band would perform alongside the likes of The Doors and The Animals. The band were soon signed to Reprise Records and released their self-titled debut album in December 1968. A massive break for the band came in 1969 when on August 15th they were the first band to play the famous Woodstock festival. 400,000 people were in attendance. Nancy would be in a almost fatal car accident in December 1969 would leave her with a major head injury. During her recovery she also suffered damage to her vocal cords which would make her have to undertake six surgeries to fix. Her last music release was in 1975 and was her self titled solo album. Since then Nancy has played with Sweetwater in reunions and has been an English teacher for over 30 years. Jack Zoomed Nancy to discuss her early musical beginnings, the impact the likes of Pat Boone and Aretha Franklin had on her, her early music work, the day she saw Jay Walker and The Pedestrians playing int eh coffeeshop window, the Monterey International Pop Festival, how the band got its name Sweetwater, the recording of their first album, the bands performance at Woodstock in 1969, the car accident Nancy went through, her music work since the accident and her work today as an English teacher. “We were really restless around the holiday inn going "we gotta get to the gig", so we finally said lets just jump in the cars and drive there, now our equipment was already there and our roadie was already there so all we had to do was get the artists, so we are driving down this one lane country road and there's cars coming the other way...so someone had this great idea about going into a farm house and calling for helicopters" - Nancy Nevins - on this episode of Vinyl Vibes talking about how the band got flown into play Woodstock Episode Hosted and Produced by Jack Hodgins
