How China Built a MASSIVE Machine That Creates Cities on Liquid Sand A giant ship cuts into the seabed and pumps a moving river of mud across open water. That mud gets trapped behind seawalls, spread across shallow water, and left to settle. A few years later, the same spot can carry roads, port slabs, and tower cranes. That’s the engine behind some of China’s fastest coastal expansion. At the center is Tiankun Hao, the giant dredger China Daily called an island making ship, with a displacement around 17,000 tons and a design built for industrial scale reclamation. Shanghai shows how big this gets. NASA documented that seawalls and dredging helped the city add well over 580 square kilometers of land along its coast. The hard part starts after the dredging. Fresh fill can behave like liquid mud, and if the ground treatment is weak, the land keeps sinking long after construction starts. #chinatechnology #gamechanger #chinamegaprojects
