This atmospheric street is lined with traditional machiya (wooden townhouses), many of which now serve as ochaya (tea houses) where geiko (Kyoto’s term for geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha) entertain guests through traditional dance, music, and conversation. The history of Hanamikoji Street dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868) when Kyoto flourished as a cultural center of Japan. Gion developed as an entertainment district near Yasaka Shrine, attracting travelers and merchants who sought entertainment in its tea houses. Over time, it became one of the most prestigious areas for geisha culture, where the strict traditions and refined arts of Kyoto’s geiko have been preserved for centuries. Walking along the stone-paved street, you’ll notice the dark wooden facades, paper lanterns, and noren curtains hanging at the entrances of the tea houses. Many of these establishments have been serving guests for generations and remain exclusive to long-time patrons. The area is particularly enchanting in the evening when soft lights illuminate the narrow lanes, creating a timeless atmosphere.
