Few events of the twentieth century engulfed as many people as China’s Cultural Revolution. Millions suffered and untold numbers died, yet it remains only barely understood. There is little agreement on when it began (1964 or 1966), how long it lasted (3 years or 10), or what it was about (revolution, culture, power struggles, Mao’s monomania). MORNING SUN is a two-hour documentary that provides multiple perspectives on this tumultuous period. The film highlights the voices and experiences of students who were in high school as the Cultural Revolution began. This young generation would whole-heartedly participate in this new revolution and would be transformed by it in ways they could not foresee. Additional voices provide a rich array of first-hand insight into this complex and tragic era that divided families, upended a nation, and cost so many lives. MORNING SUN also brings depth to the “cultural” dimensions of this period. The film examines the language, style, and content of the Cultural Revolution. It makes prominent use of the movies and plays, the music and ideas, the literature and rhetoric of the time. These cultural artifacts, in combination with the compelling interviews, chart for viewers the psychological and emotional topography of high-Maoist China.
