This story is about two friends and mysterious paintings. Once upon a time, there were two friends. The two had been very close ever since they were kids. They were so close that if they only had one bean between them, they would split it and eat it together. The two friends made a promise to each other saying, "Someday, when we're older, if I'm doing well I will help you and if you're doing well, you will help me, so we'll both live well?" The two friends grew up and got married. After they married, they lived at a distance from each other. One friend lived in the country, while the other lived in Seoul. A lot of time went by, and the friend who lived in the country became very poor. In the past, he had often failed exams and often lost money, so he did not have anything to eat, and his family was constantly hungry. He said to his wife, “When I was young, I had a friend who said he would help me. I'm going to go find him." Since he did not have the funds to travel to Seoul, his wife cut off her hair and sold it, giving him the money. He took the money and left for Seoul. Arriving in Seoul, he found his friend living in a large house. His friend even had several servants. When he knocked on the door, his friend was very happy to see him. After greeting each other excitedly, the country friend said, "I'm glad to see that you're living so well. But I am unhappy without having even enough food to eat. My wife even had to cut her hair so I could get the money to come here?" When he said this, his friend responded, "Why didn't you come sooner? Don't worry. Rest at my home for a couple days before you leave.” The city friend was a gracious host to his country friend. After a couple of days the country friend said, "Thank you. But I need to be going. Will it be possible for me to borrow money for food?" After he said this, his city friend did not give him any money but instead gave him a painting-a painting of a single crane. The country friend became angry, saying, "When we were young, we said we would help each other out. How can you be like this? What use is this painting?" His friend responded, "This painting will help you.
