Lismore in northern New South Wales faced major flooding on March 8 after ex-tropical cyclone Alfred brought heavy rains to Australia’s east coast. Wilsons River was inundated but might stay ‘below the levee’ protecting the central business district, local media reported. More than 400 mm of rain fell in 48 hours, surpassing March’s average. Thousands were evacuated and ‘about a quarter of a million’ lost power as winds brought down lines.
