This video describes my first experience at tackling a 14er in Colorado. I figure I would get two for the price of one and attempt to summit Grays Peak and Torreys Peak. Overall the hike was 8.3 miles RT. The saddle between Grays and Torreys looked scarier than reality. If your gonna bag one you might as well bag the other while you are up there. It was a great experience. I learned a ton from this hike about altitude, hydration and food. It seems around 13k ft. I just started to slow down dramatically and take breaks every 100 ft or so. I didn't experience in altitude sickness just running out of breath. Coming from North Carolina to the Rocky Mountains was a real eye-opener with respect to altitude and exposure. I also realized that I needed to treat this almost like a half marathon in terms of energy and hydration. On the way down from Torreys I felt okay in terms of my legs and lungs but I just had no energy. I was dragging myself down the mountain back to my truck. I realized that I should probably carbo load the night before and eat/drink something every mile while on the trail to keep up my energy stores. I just think I had depleted my glycogen and had nothing left to tap into at that point. All great lessons I learned from this hike. It definitely got me hooked on hiking 14ers. I try to do a few each year when time permits. I'm still practicing on the Class 2 and Class 3 14ers as I do have some fear of heights but not enough to stop me. I've realized it is never as bad as you think. Thanks for watching! #14ers
