Peritoneal Dialysis access for living a longer life || Aurses Healthcare For those with a more complicated work schedule, or who simply live too far from a hemodialysis center, there is another method to do dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a method in which highly concentrated sterile fluid is pumped into the abdomen via a surgically inserted permanent catheter. A thin wall of the peritoneum (a layer that covers the inside surface of the abdominal wall) contains many small blood vessels. Once the highly concentrated fluid contacts the peritoneum, osmosis forces the extra fluid and metabolic waste out of these blood vessels and into this solution. The solution is then pumped out of the abdomen via the catheter. PD may take 9 to 11 hours. It can be done at home, and the patient is responsible for conducting this procedure properly. Patients are trained by specialized dialysis nurses weeks before starting PD on their own. Patients are recommended to have a clean room at home that they use just for the PD. We also recommend patients always follow the aseptic techniques when doing the PD. And we recommend keeping pets out of the home to avoid contamination of the PD catheter. Patients with a PD catheter can take showers, however, it is not recommended to submerse the catheter underwater. The risks involved with PD are, but are not limited to, a buildup of scar tissues within the catheter, intra-abdominal infection, migration of the catheter, and bowel perforation.
