Herodotus, considered the father of history, recounts in his fourth book the story of these steppe nomads and their customs, including the worship of the god of war, which involved planting a sword in the ground. He also details the tragic attempted invasion of the world of the Scythians and the Sauromatians by Darius I, then Emperor of Achaemenid Persia. Trapped with his army by the cold and snow on the vast steppe, he received a diplomatic gift from the Scythian chieftains: the carcasses of a pigeon, a rabbit, and a frog, along with five arrows.
