This video discusses some important things to look out for when viewing many an E39 M5. There are many things to think about when purchasing one of these 20+ year-old German muscle cars, so as well as creating a short video with the basics, we have given a written breakdown in the description with a slightly more detailed checklist for you to go through. Check out the written version of our E39 BMW M5 buyer's guide here: ............................................................................................................................. So it’s easier to look back to reference, and also because certain people forget what to say when they are in front of a camera, we decided to give you a written breakdown of the E39 M5 buyer's guide. Let’s start with the engine holy trinity. Engine: Rod bearings Vanos Chain and guides Symptoms include rattling/ticking/excessive noise. Brittle guides can leave plastic in the sump. The vanos can make loud ticking and a spun bearing will give off a loud knocking. These things can cause serious implications. At the time of writing it costs between 4/5 k to fix all these together. These engines are supposed to take 10W-60. It’s worth checking the oil level and the type of oil used. Other things in the engine bay to check: leaky ABS brake lines Leaky PAS reservoir / pipes Coolant level / leaks The last time the viscous fan clutch was changed Condition of CCV pipes and last refresh Leaky sump gaskets Weeping Rocker cover gaskets Leaky oil filler cap ( E46 M3 cap can resolve this) Bonnet alignment and catch/release Leaky rear main seal Fuel pump last change (prone to fail) Leaks around the oil filter and its gasket Brakes, suspension, and drivetrain: Warped brakes ( shaking/vibration can be caused by a few things however . This could be pad deposits etc etc requires investigation) Suspension age/condition Thrust arms and the precision of the steering Wheel wobble Clunking propshaft ( UJ isn’t serviceable as this can sometimes be the source of noise but also can be the coupler/guibo) Driveshaft condition Differential ( can make clunking sounds or a ‘wind noise’ when driving ) and the front seal can leak Differential bushings (if these go there can be excessive movement and as a result, loud clunking Brake lines (corrosion along lines) Body work and interior : Rust ( These cars can be prone to rust. Check jacking points, sills, fuel filler cap, boot & bonnet, boot floor, and underneath arches) Airbag recall Wing mirror / centre mirror can leak photo chromatic liquid check for bubbling and evidence of leaks. OEM mirrors are expensive! (£300 per wing mirror) Cup holders are flimsy and prone to break Check all electronics and full function (windows, sunroof, wing mirrors, electric/heated seats, infotainment, central locking, parking sensors and HVAC panel) Condition of interior and leather as M5 Interiors can be expensive and rare Check for damp. Sometimes Vapour barrier can fail. You want no wet patches or damp anywhere High OBD dead pixels and whether they have been replaced recently Not imperative but the purists love a good condition/complete toolkit Condition of the style 65 wheels. Is there corrosion/cracks/buckles We would always recommend a pre-purchase inspection as they are always going to be able to see more than you will on an average roadside inspection. Here are some highly knowledgeable garages we could recommend for this: https://www.ultimatevelocity.co.uk http://www.bmrperformance.co.uk There is a huge E39 community, where a lot of cars are known as well as dodgy ones ! Consider joining some of these groups and asking the owners themselves: / bmwe3. . https://m5ownersclub.co.uk Share your E39 purchase (or any car) with us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thecarchaps?igs...
