Zach shows us how to mix mowing and landscaping projects to make a massive compost pile without too much additional work. He says that you want to make sure you have all your resources nearby and that you don’t have to move them all over the farm. In this episode, the farm had a nice start with some dried ginger stalks that had been covered with a tarp. On top of this they layered in some banana logs to make a first layer and to create a form with which to make a huge bed of dried banana leaves, in essence a carbon raft to start their compost pile. Curtis took the brushcutter and whacked a bunch of nearby tall canegrass and this got added to the pile for a second green layer. Zach explains that it is this green nitrogen that helps to break down the brown carbon to make black soil, or black gold as he likes to call it. “For farming, compost is like money in the bank!” Next they came in with a nice layer of wood chips. Zach takes us to the pile to show how the wood chips are covered in white Hyphae which is beneficial fungal activity. He explains how these indigenour microorganisms are in essence inoculating the compost pile with essential bacteria and fungus and how they are going to jump start the pile. They continue with more layers of brown and green as they build a massive lasagna-style compost pile. Meanwhile, Zach goes around and mows and collects two big trash cans of grass clipping which they add on top as an icing to this compost cake. They are careful to wet down all the layers and they now cover the pile with a tarp and let it cook for 6 months. Zach can now rest easy that he will have plenty of rich organic topsoil with which to amend their beds and plant their seeds.
