This is our manufacturing process from inside! We are happy to share some of the Thai cutters' experience. We start with preform. The first order of business – probably the trickiest part – is preform. In the trade, preforms are sometimes separated into two types – first preform and second preform. The first preform is a very rough sample of what the stone would become, but it is as important as a foundation in architecture – if it's done wrong, all the following steps can be useless! The second preform is much closer to the final result, during this step, stone can be brought to the final shape and even some facets can be set. For precise cut and expensive rough usually, the whole faceting process is done by one person, but for calibrated the first step is done by a preformist. To be successful in what he does, a preformist should have a waste experience with rough (usually only cutters with big experience con become preformists). During preforming: • the rough piece is examined and sawed if needed • the shape and size of the future gemstone are determined • peripheral inclusions and cracks are removed For coloured gemstones, this process requires special knowledge and experience because during this step the specialist needs to determine which shape and depth will better show the colour of the rough. For materials with double refraction, like corundum, for example, the orientation also determines the shade. Don't forget that if there are inclusions (and there are almost always some!), they need to be positioned almost inconspicuously. Considering all this, the performing process is just one step short of magic! But this is only the first step nevertheless. 🔍 More episodes to come, stay updated!
