Here is a comprehensive sound comparison comparing the engine and stock exhaust sound of the Naturally Aspirated 2.5L vs. the Turbo 2.5L of the 4th gen Mazda 3. You might assume that the more powerful turbocharged engine is louder, but the results may surprise you. These are back-to-back comparisons of the engine startup sound of both cars, recorded in front of the engine bay and recorded behind the exhaust pipe, as well as the Skyactiv-G engine revving sounds from in front and behind both cars. Also included are back-to-back comparisons of the drive-by sound and the engine sounds from the interior of both cars. So, we cover exterior and interior sound. The comparison was recorded with two different types of microphones, placed in somewhat different positions so that the variety of nuances in the sound could be captured in different ways between the two microphones.
