Venous return and cardiac output can be equal at only one point where both curves intersect each other. Sympathetic stimulation, positive inotropic agents, etc shift the cardiac output curve upwards. Inhibition of sympathetic activity, negative ionotropic agents, and certain disease conditions move this curve downwards. An increase in intrapleural pressure shifts the curve to the right, and a decrease shifts it to the left. An increase in blood volume and increased venous tone shifts the venous return curve upwards. And decrease in blood volume and venous tone moves the curve downwards. An increase in arteriolar tone decreases the slope of the curve. And decrease in the arteriolar tone increases the slope.
