Step 1 - show child a visual strip of what will be in the tray, ie sit, lotto, puzzle, finished. Step 2 - lead child to the table (already set up) in a quieter area of the room. Step 3 - repeat to the child the instructions using clear key words and the visual strip. Step 4 - complete activities with the child, encouraging independence as much as possible, ie getting child to get activities out of the tray. Step 5 - when finished activities encourage child to put the activity into the red tray and remove the correct picture from the strip and put it into the ‘finished’ box. Step 6 - show child the strip to reinforce what they have done and when they have finished. Throughout use positive reinforcement to encourage the child to complete the tasks. If the child struggles to keep focus make the activity shorter, it is important that the child finishes the activities on the strip so they can understand the process. Also keep referring back to the visual strip when moving onto the next activity.
