Update: The tiny structure shown has since been leveled. It was probably for the main phone line that serviced the entire mall. I think it was left in place by the phone company, then abandoned? Hillside Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago, had its own mall for close to forty years. The location took advantage of an older surface street newtwork plus the 'new" expressways that were started in the 1950's and completed during the 1960's. The mall was originally an open air mall but it had a roof put on sometime around 1965. Carson's was the anchor on the east end and Goldblatts on the west. In between were store like Walgreens and Wolworth's, as well as numerous smaller stores that included a fantastic carmel corn shop as well as a currency exchange. Some locals claim that it was the construction of the "Eisenhower Extension" that killed off the mall. The original parcel was a massive square of land but when the old Congress Expressway (renamed as "Eisenhower") was extended, a giant berm cut off the northern third of the land. Some say that the new highway made acess difficult and that potential customers would go to other area shopping centers. There may be some truth to that theory. The OakBrook Mall opened about 1960 and Yorktown opened about 1965. The operators of Hillside Mall tried to keep it going but it eventually became an empty and tired looking place. The old Carson's came down around 1998 and was replaced by Car Max and the Goldblatts/Zayre/State DMC/Menards came down circa 2015. [ In the video I omitted mention of the old Dominicks Grocery Store that was housed in an outbuilding which stood along the highway berm. There was also a gas station/car stereo place along Wolf, and just outside the east end of the parking area, stood a Sandy's Hamburger stand.) Irving P. Feldspar's Video Universe Irving P.
