(6 May 2003) STORY SUSAN SARANDON HONOURED AT LINCOLN CENTER IN NEW YORK Susan Sarandon was honored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center Monday Night in New York. The event which annually honors a film legend brought out the likes of John Turturro, David Bowie and Iman, Geena Davis Tim Curry and Sarandon's partner Tim Robbins. Sarandon did not shy away from reporters' questions about her anti-war stance as well as The Baseball Hall of Fame's recent cancellation of the pair for an event about the film Bull Durham. David Bowie and Iman walked away from a reporter when asked about Susan Sarandon speaking out saying it couldn't be answered in a "soundbite". Born in New York City, Sarandon began her career as a Ford model and got her first break in John Avildson's Joe (1970) in which she played a troubled teenager. At that time she was also a regular on the continuing series A World Apart. IN the mid 1970s, she starred in The Rocky Horror Picture Show opposite TIm Curry in which she morphed from virgin to vixen. Her first Oscar nomination came with Louis Malle's Atlantic City. Her next nomination was for Bull Durham in which she played a brainy baseball fan who attracts both Kevin Costner and a young Tim Robbins. She teamed with Geena Davis in Thelma and Louise the road movie and feminist anthem that garnered the actress another nomination. In Lorenzo's Oil, Sarandon played a devoted mother who takes on the medical establishment to help her son. She was nominated for a fourth time by the Academy. Her fifth nomination (for Best Supporting Actress) was for The Client. Additional feature credits include King of the Gypsies, Compromising Positions, White Palace, A Dry White Season, The Witches of Eastwick, Bob Roberts, Light Sleeper, Little Women, Safe Passage, and more recently Igby Goes Down, The Banger Sisters and Moonlight Mile. In 2002 the Tribute honored Francis Ford Coppola. Past recipients of the honor include Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese, Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, Audrey Hepburn, and Sir Laurence Olivier to name a few. The tribute has been held since 1972 in recognition of the contribution of outstanding performers and film makers.
