The 1978 Kenyan banknotes represent one of the last modern issues featuring Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s first President, on the obverse of all denominations. These notes were issued by the Central Bank of Kenya and are part of the pre-Moi series before new designs under President Daniel arap Moi began in 1980. 🇰🇪 ⸻ 💸 5 Shillings (Brown) This smallest denomination carries a portrait of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta on the front. The reverse depicts a coffee plantation scene with huts and palm trees, celebrating one of Kenya’s key agricultural exports. A lion head watermark is visible when held to light. ⸻ 🤑 10 Shillings (Green-Brown) The 10 shillings note also shows Kenyatta’s portrait on the obverse. On the reverse, it features cattle grazing, symbolizing the importance of pastoralism and cattle herding in Kenya’s economy and culture, with Mount Kenya in the background. ⸻ 💵 20 Shillings On this denomination, Kenyatta’s portrait is paired with a dramatic family of lions on the reverse, emphasizing Kenya’s rich wildlife heritage. The twin peaks of Mount Kenya appear behind the lions — a classic landscape motif for the series. ⸻ 💲100 Shillings (Largest of the Set) The top value of this issue continues the theme with Kenyatta on the front, while the reverse typically showcases a statue or national monument associated with Kenya’s history and independence spirit. This larger format note was the highest denomination in regular circulation in 1978. ⸻ Design Themes & Notes • All notes feature Bilingual English/Swahili text and label “Banki Kuu Ya Kenya — Central Bank of Kenya.” • The imagery reflects Kenya’s leaders, iconic landscapes, wildlife, and economic life — a common motif in mid-20th-century African banknotes. • These issues are now obsolete and collectible, with Kenyatta’s appearance on notes being a hallmark of the early republic period before later design changes. #money #moneycollection #moneymuseum #banknotes #banknotescollector #banknotesoftheworld #papermoney #papermoneycollection #numismatics #numismatica #currency #notaphily #kenya #kenyan #africa
