A scuffle broke out between a group of protestors and police during a protest in Senapati district of Manipur on June 3. The incident occurred on the second day of the protest against the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the ongoing border fencing along the India-Myanmar international border. During the protest, demonstrators overturned the vehicle of the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district. The agitation, called by the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), was carried out by the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) along with its federating units — the Mao Students’ Union (MSU), Maram Students’ Union (MKS), Poumai Naga Students’ Union (PNTM), Thangal Students’ Union (TSU), and Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Senapati Zone (ZSU-SZ). According to Bosco Kashung, Vice-President of ANSAM, protests across the Naga hill districts had remained peaceful, but the incident in Senapati occurred due to non-compliance by the SP, which led to a heated argument. The student body condemned the incident and termed it as retaliation by the SP, police personnel, and central security forces. Kashung also appealed to the public to continue supporting their ongoing agitation. Meanwhile, Saloni Tony, President of SDSA, alleged that the incident was triggered by provocation from the SP’s office and demanded an ‘unconditional apology’ from both the SP of Senapati and the Additional SP (Law & Order). ANSAM, the apex Naga student body in Manipur, had launched a ‘People’s Movement’ on June 2 in the form of a 48-hour office picketing across all Naga hill districts. The protest was in opposition to the Centre’s construction of border fencing and the scrapping of the FMR along the Indo-Myanmar border. The movement is supported by several Naga frontal organisations, including the United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women Union (NWU), Chandel Naga People’s Organisation, Tangkhul Naga Headman Association, and all federating units of ANSAM. ========= Support Independent Journalism by becoming Our Premium Member: https://slp.eastmojo.com/anniversary ========= Subscribe to never miss an update: / @eastmojoofficial ========= Visit our website: https://www.eastmojo.com/ Become a Premium Member: https://slp.eastmojo.com/anniversary Find us on Google: https://news.google.com/publications/...
