What is Environmental Justice and Environmental Racism?

For decades, minority communities have been at risk of high levels of environmental pollution. Some of the factors causing this are hazardous facilities, extractive activities, toxic waste dumps, or just neglect. This is a result of the lack of environmental justice. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines environmental justice as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Environmental justice communities are those affected disproportionately by pollution and they tend to be minority communities which lack wealth and power. Low-income communities that tend to be minority groups are disproportionately impacted by polluting factories or industries due to the cheap land and labor. Environmental racism, on the other hand, is the notion that people of color are disproportionately impacted by environmental contamination due to their race and color more than other factors.
