System science environmentalists and economists believe that perpetual economic growth is unsustainable. This is because the Earth is not growing. It is finite. One system science rule is that sub-systems cannot physically outgrow systems. There are many complex systems on Earth. The Earth system is the largest system on Earth. All other systems are sub-systems of the Earth system. The world economy has a physical scale and is growing exponentially. It is a sub-system of the Earth system. It physically cannot outgrow the Earth system. So the world economy is physically growing exponentially within the Earth system that is not physically growing. It is finite. Something has to give! In a closed system, energy enters and leaves the system, but matter does not. The Earth fits the definition of a closed system. In an open system, both energy and matter enter and leave the system. The world economy fits the description of an open system. It gets its matter from the Earth system. Both the Earth and the world economy get have solar energy entering them and infrared radiation exiting them. The economy derives its existence from the Earth system. The economy is a sub-system of the Earth system. It's not the other way around as growth economists imply.
