Trump has "broken" India's trust in USA and scepticism is back: Navtej Sarna, former Ambassador to the USA, to Karan Thapar for The Wire. .......................................... One of India’s most highly regarded former ambassadors to the United States of America, who also served in Washington during the first Trump presidency, says that President Trump has “broken” India’s trust in America and scepticism is back. Navtej Sarna says the optimism that used to prevail in the relationship, what he calls “the positive unquestionable narrative”, is no longer true and no longer holds. Mr. Sarna says India has responded to the changed relationship with the USA with what he calls “dignified restraint”. However, he adds “we cannot wait with bated breath" for the relationship to change. As he puts it, “it’s not just Trump, the United States itself is in political churn." This is a tour d’horizon interview seeking to understand and analyze the present state of Indo-US relations. Mr. Sarna talks of all the aspects of that relationship i.e. political, economic, tariffs, H-1B visas and student visas, Russian oil purchases, China, Pakistan and responds to questions about whether the real problem is that India is not as important to Trump as it used to be to his predecessors. It doesn’t matter as much. Mr. Sarna also addresses the question is the relationship with Russia more important today than the one with the USA. I will stop there. I want to encourage you to see this interview for yourself rather than seek to paraphrase or present a precis of what Mr. Sarna has said.
