Dedicated to helping people who want to make their cosplay and costuming hobby safer for everyone. Especially for other players from backgrounds which have been historically excluded and targeted. I cover many of the basics of allyship, plus specific approaches and techniques you can use to you target change and feel sustainable over time as you work to help make your hobby spaces more inclusive and equitable. Allyship can feel challenging to start and sustain, but it is important as we strive towards diversity and helping everyone feel like they are included and belong. Many of the groups and spaced dedicated to learning about history have components which can make prospective players feel and be unsafe, especially when they come from targeted communities. This can include cultural insensitivity, lack of diversity in leadership, racial, trans or queer phobia, ableism, among many other barriers. This is a talk I gave at the 2024 SCA Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity & Belonging (DEIB) Webinar dedicated to sharing knowledge on core values of equity and inclusion. For more information on this and other webinars, please see: scadei.wordpress.com The SCA is a non-profit group dedicated to historical research and education. The mission statement of the group is: The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international non-profit volunteer educational organization. The SCA is devoted to the research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat, and employing knowledge of history to enrich the lives of participants through events, demonstrations, and other educational presentations and activities. Information on the group can be found here: www.sca.org Building on a foundation of dyeing through the historical recreation group the SCA, I teach foraging, harvesting, and using natural dyeing to a wide variety of audiences. When not running around dressed like a Viking, I am a wildlife ecologist with a focus on assessing and managing endangered/at-risk species.
