Featured on the Putumayo collection "Latin Groove" Originally released on March 12, 2002 From the liner notes: The Barrio Cubano project was masterminded by Ronald Rubinel, a gifted Paris-based keyboard player and producer originally from the French Caribbean island Martinique. Rubinel has worked with zouk superstars Kassav’ and a wide range of African and Caribbean artists such as Pierre Akendengue, Pepe Kalle, Koffi Olomide, Edith Lefel, Cesaria Evora and others. One of the most important producers in the Paris world music scene, Rubinel is considered a Caribbean Quincy Jones: a talented musician who is a genius at coaxing accessible yet high-quality pop hits out of a variety of artists. Recently, Rubinel has specialized in all-star thematic projects such as Ethnikolor and Multikolor, modernized versions of French Caribbean folklore, Reggaekolor, zoukified versions of Bob Marley classics, and Compakolor, uptempo renditions of classic Haitian compas tracks. Rubinel has been spending time in Cuba lately, working with some of the best young hip-hop artists and DJs.The result is Barrio Cubano, an impressive fusion of Caribbean pop,Afro-Cuban son, and Spanish rap. “El Carretero (The Cart Driver)” is a classic Cuban guajira composed by Guillermo Portabales. This version retains the acoustic guitar riffs and rootsy vocal style of traditional guajira, while pumping up the volume with a funky contemporary drumbeat, subtle keyboard flourishes and the potent rap of Cuban hip-hop collective Chicos de Acero. Alejandro Rodriguez Oliva and Marcellino Linares Arce, both of whom have the soulful singing style of elder statesmen of Cuban music, provide lead vocals on this track. “Along the track by my house / A cart driver passed / With his sentimental songs / The guajiro sang / I’m going to the crossing to unburden my load /There I’ll reach the end of my crushing labor / On horseback we’ll ride to the mountain.”
