Composer are Peter Yarrow and Phillip Jarrell. 'I never liked the song too much, and I still don't,' Mary MacGregor has said. She was speaking of Torn Between Two Lovers, her 1977 million-seller, co-written and produced by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary (that Mary, of course, being Mary Travers). 'I didn't like Torn because it was boring to sing - a real 'sleeper' kind of ballad. Peter thought it was a real statement, and he wanted the song to be a success. He wanted a woman to sing it, and he wanted that woman to be me.' Mary, who began her career in Minneapolis folk groups, offered a clue to why this particular song became a No.1 hit single. 'A lot of people are torn between two lovers, or have been, or will be,' she explained. 'I guess this record must have touched a lot of them.' In fact, the song was indeed inspired by Boris Pasternak's 1957 novel, Doctor Zhivago, which, of course, features a man in love with two women. Torn Between Two Lovers gave Minnesota's Mary MacGregor her only British hit, reaching No.4 in 1977. When folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary broke up in 1971, the three members ventured off to solo work with varying degrees of success. For Peter Yarrow, his greatest post-PPM moment came in 1977 when he co-wrote and co-produced Mary MacGregor's chart topping song Torn Between Two Lovers. It remained a solitary hit for MacGregor, and little more was heard of Yarrow beyond that point, apart from the occasional Peter, Paul and Mary reunion.
