I DO NOT OWN ANY RIGHTS TO THIS MUSIC Pete Seeger - LIVING IN THE COUNTRY GIBSON B45-12. The song has been popularized by many great players, notably Mr. Seeger himself and Mr. Leo Kottke. The tuning for this piece is standard but for the low E courses, tuned down a tone to D. This finger usage of the picking hand (thumb, index, middle - a pianist would term the digits as finger 1, finger 2, and finger 3 whereas some guitar teachers name the digits Thumb, 1, and 2) is called Cotton Picking (Elizabeth Cotton) or Travis Picking (Merle Travis) or claw-hammer. The thumb on the picking hand strikes the low D courses and the actual D strings/courses alternately as 8th notes. The middle and index fingers of the picking hand combine with the thumb pattern to pick the melody mixed in with anticipated notes - occasional 16ths over forward and backward rolls. ON THE PICKING HAND: if the order of usage was middle, index, thumb, this pattern would be deemed as a backward roll, Alternately, the finger pattern being thumb, index, middle would be termed as a forward roll. Easy-peasy. JUST START SLOWLY. Screw up. Get fed up. Walk away. Come back to it later. Your muscles will remember some....more each time. Laugh track at the lid by Elle Tufts.
