Did you know there was a time when God told the Children of Israel, “Don’t follow your parents?” Today, you are going to ask yourself, “Where is this guy coming from? Is Brandt a heretic?” In Ezekiel Chapter 20, verses 18 and19, we read startling words: “I said to their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not follow the statutes of your parents or keep their laws or defile yourselves with their idols. I am the Lord your God; follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws’” (New International Version). First, allow me to say that if your parents have been faithfully following the Word of God, even though they have human foibles and flaws, then this word may NOT be for you. However, for most young people born in this last generation, and greatly influenced by the highly secularized mindset of our western world, it is truly time to disavow the values of the past generation, and to get right with God, on God’s terms. Central to God’s instruction in Ezekiel, is the looming question, “Do you believe that Jesus is the “Only Way” to the Father? This question means, “Do you believe that your salvation comes through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross? Do you believe that Jesus provides the only access to Father God, and that your personal faith in Jesus’ sacrifice to cover your personal sins is the means that God has prescribed for you to be clean and righteous before a holy and just God? Do you believe that confessing your sins to Jesus in true repentance will take you from a fallen state, doomed to spend eternity without God, into a heavenward journey where Jesus will present you with joy to God, the Father? Do you believe this is possible because you have asked Jesus to cleanse you through His blood sacrifice and to become your Savior? Have you dedicated your life completely to Him and become His abandoned follower?” By in large, this young generation does not understand what it means to be a follower of Christ. So today, just like God’s word to the Children of Israel, who were born in the Wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt, God’s instructions are still relevant: “Do not follow the statutes of your parents or keep their laws or defile yourselves with their idols. I am the Lord your God; follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws.” Today, we pray for this new generation to be freed from the secular tangling of the mind of this current culture and to come to know the living, life-changing Christ. We pray that God will raise up and train a new breed of Christians to become powerful witnesses to the saving grace of God. We pray that this generation will become powerful communicators of Jesus’ message who declared, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Today, we obey. Today, we pray. Today, we say, “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6: 9 &10).
