Sifu Matt Ember is my longtime instructor in Kung Fu San Soo. His advice for anyone trying to improve their martial arts skills is simple-- focus on ONE THING at a time. Students often make learning more difficult by trying to fix too many things at the same time. That doesn't work because we're not computers! We don't have multiple processors capable of handling separate tasks simultaneously. So, instead of analyzing your footwork, punching power, and breathing all at the same time, just pick one. The goal is to isolate each individual skill in your martial arts practice and give it your full attention. Maybe you start with your footwork and drill it until it feels right. When you find your groove and do things right automatically, then you can move on and pick something else. The same advice applies to teaching martial arts. Yelling, "Bend your knees! Keep your hands up! Chin down!" at your students will only confuse them. You have to pick your battles one at a time. So, whether you're a student or teacher, don't overwhelm yourself with too many corrections. If you want to learn martial arts faster, prioritize your goals, then set up a progression in your practice. Pick a skill and give it your full attention until you can't do it wrong. Then move on to the next challenge. THANKS FOR WATCHING!
