Why should you not interpret your MRI report? Dr.G.Balamurali #MRI #Report #MRIReport #DrBalamurali There is a lot of confusion about ‘what is the best investigation to do for your spine’. Hi, I am Dr. Bala, spine and neuro surgeon. When you see your doctor, he would first take a proper history about your problem, he would do an examination, and then he will order some investigations to find out if there is a problem. If there is no problem, then there is no need for an investigation. So the investigations usually are blood tests, to rule out any infection or inflammation, an x-ray to look at the alignment of your spine, CT scan to look at the bone, and any problems related to the bone. The gold standard normally for a spine problem is an MRI scan. An MRI scan shows all the problems in your spine. The disc, the bones, the nerves, any tumors, the surrounding tissues and everything else. The problem is, when we do investigations, we always find out something. There has to be a correlation between your problem and the scan. If there is a good correlation between your symptom, for example, you have a back pain and pain going down your leg, and the scan shows that there is a disc problem, on the same side, which is causing that pain. Then, the diagnosis is done and the treatment becomes very straightforward. The confusion is when your MRI scan or a CT scan does not correlate with your problems. And this is where we start shopping around and looking for a solution. The biggest problem is most people when they do an MRI before they go to their doctor they read the MRI scan. The MRI scan will show various findings, you know disc problems in multiple levels, that your spine is narrowed, there is minimum compression, there is severe compression. There is so much confusing information which does not make any sense. So you panic and then you start asking for opinions. Remember, It is just an observation. It is, for example, say you take a photograph of somebody's face and if I ask 10 people to interpret it, you are just going to say that the nose looks straight or looks crooked, the eyes are bigger, the lips are small or the cheekbones are bigger. So it is just an observation of your problem. But that has to correlate with your symptoms. And only then, when the two match then the diagnosis and treatment can be given appropriately. So never read your MRI scan, the lengthy reports and panic about it. Let the experts make the decision. Let them find out what exactly is the problem. So the investigation is only a guide to the treatment. The treatment will still vary from doctor to doctor. So try not to confuse yourself with the MRI scan reports, and try not to shop around for a solution based on your MRI. Without a proper patient's problem a clinical examination the MRI scan has no value. So we are not treating the scan, we are treating the patient. Thank you.
