Does keeping plants in pots stunt their growth? Once the roots are constricted, their growth will be stunted for a while. Eventually their roots will fill up the whole pot and there won't be enough space to "breathe" and this will kill them slowly. It takes a lot of time being cramped before it starts to negatively affect them though. Because of this, when plants get pot bound/root bound, you have to either move them up to a larger pot, or prune the roots and reuse the pot. Using pots is a good strategy to keep the growth under control, especially for plants that grow quite large.
