Through an organization Coughlin called the National Union for Social Justice, he gained millions of listeners and donors, magnifying his influence, but gradually, an ugly anti-Semitism crept into his broadcasts and public speeches. Coughlin implied that an international bankers' conspiracy was maneuvering to take over the world's money markets and profit from everyone else's misery. The Federal Reserve was a particular target of Coughlin's fury, as he implied that Jews were manipulating the agency under Roosevelt's "Jew Deal" to their benefit. Eventually, the Vatican intervened to moderate Coughlin's rhetoric, but the priest pioneered a pattern of prejudice that would reemerge in the broadcasts of the late Rush Limbaugh and his many imitators. Conservative columnist Bret Stephens in the NYTimes (3/13/23): "I sometimes think of [Tucker] Carlson in the same mold as Father Coughlin, but worse: At least Coughlin was an honest-to-God fascist, a sincere bigot, whereas Carlson only plays one on TV for the sake of ratings." Although AM radio today is given over largely to right-wing political commentary and religious broadcasting, FM and satellite radio offer music in every genre imaginable. Radio retains the power to inform as well as entertain, nowhere more so than in the offerings of public radio, always found at the left end of the dial which is reserved for non-commercial broadcasts. In your car or while you're doing tasks that don't require mental engagement, kook for your NPR affiliate, where you will find programming that will engage your mind at virtually any hour.
