SURPRISED BY NEWS FROM THE POPE IN ILOCOS SUR! Arriving in Santa Maria, I was surprised to see a church atop a hill, with fortress-like walls! Then I found out that two days previous, the Pope had declared it a Minor Basilica! News Article: https://cbcpnews.net/cbcpnews/pope-fr... The day starts in Tagudin, where I take the road to Suyo then through a narrow valley towards Sigay. The "Falls of Happiness" (Sangbay ni Ragsak) are my first stop, an easy trek down to a beautiful falls with a rainbow appearing! The rest of the valley is incredible, with terraces and the river together, and rice being harvested everywhere, before emerging into a huge gorge, with the town of Sigay sat at the top, overlooking potential invaders. Passing Del Pilar en route to Santa Maria at the coast, the bell tower emerges, followed by the castle-like walls of the Church. I ate some Ilocano food first, but then saw the now Minor Basilica (the Pope declared it 2 days before my visit) for myself - it holds an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church here used to hold outreach into the mountains of Abra - so I followed the old trade route to Pilar - but I was a day too late for the market! So onwards to Bangued, and one miki soup later, it was time to take the mountain pass to Nueva Era - I'm going to sleep near another famous World Heritage Church at Paoay tonight - but first, time for some bagnet! ================ CONTACT ME!
