Beroe forskalii (Ctenophora): a comb jelly with global distribution

Beroe forskalii (Ctenophora, Nuda, Beroida, Beroidae), an oceanic species considered to have a global distribution, is a very active ctenophore. Like other beroid comb jellies, B. forskalii lacks tentacles and uses its wide and flexible mouth to swallow entire large preys, usually other gelatinous planktonic organisms. Inside its mouth there are a special type of cilia – the macrocilia – used to bite and to seize their prey. Oliveria & Migotto (2014) report the first occurrence of Beroe forskalii in South American Atlantic coastal waters, with notes on the use of macrociliary patterns for beroid identification (Open access article available at http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.37...)
