Paul Friedrich Ernst Gerhardt (not to be confused with the Reformation theologian and great Lutheran composer of similar name: Paul Gerhardt, 1607 - 1676) was a German organist and composer around the turn of the 19th century. He was born in Leipzig, where he also trained and had his first organist position. He then became organist in Zwickau, Saxony, with access to a large concert organ, where he stayed until his death. He wrote his pieces much within the late Romantic tradition; this little pre- or postlude in C major can attest to that. It is marked Moderato and "Mit streichenden Stimmen" (with string-like voices). The piece is No. 1 in "175 Neue Orgelstücke" collected and edited by Johann Diebold, available on the IMSLP website.
