ST REMY DE PROVENCE Chic, cosmopolitan and destination for the Smart Set! Only 6 kilometers from Les Baux lies Saint-Rémy-de-Provence - a commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southern France. Located in the northern part of the Alpilles, it has a population of around 10000. This once sleepy but beautiful town has become a magnet for visitors, with its café society, branded outlets, luxury food stores, artistic atmosphere and interior-design shops. Although close to the Côte d'Azur, its vibe is far removed from the brash modernity and bling culture of the coast. Instead, visitors are attracted by the irresistible combination of sophisticated simplicity and top-class restaurants. St Remy de Provence is the birthplace of the famous astrologer Nostradamus, who published a long series of prophecies in 1555 which continue to mystify, intrigue and (frankly) exasperate us to this day. Depending on how you interpret his enigmatic poems, he seems to have predicted the Great Fire of London in 1666, the rise of Hitler in the 1930s, the bombings of Horoshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and even the assassination of President JF Kennedy in 1963. The fact that his poems are vague means that his words can be endlessly reinterpreted to fit historical events. This leafy, Provençal market town was also yet another of Vincent Van Gogh’s haunts, although for much of the time he was incarcerated in the Asylum of Saint Paul, during which he painted another 150 masterpieces in one hectic 12-month blitz of work. The Romans were also fans of St Remy and today on the southern outskirts of the city you can still see the ruins of the Roman city of Glanum which was built in 6 BC, including a triumphal arch, thermal baths, temples, basilica and forum. Excavations began in 1921 and work is still in progress, archaeologists believe that the total remains represent a surface six or seven times the size of the area already uncovered. Come to St Remy for a dose of sophisticated Provencal living; visit chic shops until you drop; and then have a gourmet meal or just a coffee in one of the many uber-trendy restaurants on the leafy boulevards. You will love it
