This is the unreleased early rocking guitar version, replacing the solo drums version that was actually performed in this show. Full volume for this one please! Abba visited Madrid on May 27-28 1979 to record 2 tv shows at the Roma Studios. The first show was "300 Millones" in which they performed I Have A Dream, Does Your Mother Know (solo drums intro), Voulez-Vous and Chiquitita (in Spanish). It was shown all over Latin and South America on June 3rd. The group then had one hour for lunch in a nearby restaurant where they had grilled steak and salad before the second show. This was "Aplauso" broadcast in Spain in which they performed Does Your Mother Know (this video with solo drums intro), Chiquitita (in Spanish) and Voulez-Vous. Benny and Bjorn took a song writing break to the Bahamas for a fortnight on January 22 1979 hoping for some musical inspiration. It worked - they came up with Voulez-Vous, Kisses Of Fire, Does Your Mother Know, As Good As New and I Have A Dream within 2 months to complete the Voulez-Vouz album. Bjorn recalls: "In the Bahamas we were staying next door to the Rolling Stones - 'Sitting In The Palm Tree', one of the songs I sang lead on, recently reminded me of Keith Richards in Fiji!" Does Your Mother Know had the working title 'I Can Do It' and two versions were recorded. An early rocking version was recorded on February 6 1979 which was used for the tv special 'Abba in Switzerland' filmed on February 16 and can be heard in this video. The final version that was released with the drums solo introduction was recorded on March 27 1979. Drummer Ola Blunkert recalls: "Benny asked me to do some solo drum bars for the intro. I sort of copied some cool drumming that I had recently seen at a Rod Stewart concert by his drummer Carmine Appice. I liked the fact that the song would start with drums only, because that was a bit unusual for ABBA". Does Your Mother Know is a daring tribute to cross-generation flirting in big city nightclubs. Bjorn recalls: "I had read a newspaper article about relationships between older men and young girls. I had the idea of reversing the situation and creating a song about a man who instead of trying to pick up a girl turns round and says "Oh what are you doing out tonight, does your mother know that you're out?". This song has me singing the lead. My voice is not bad and its even a bit charming in a song like this." This was the only Abba single with Bjorn as lead vocalist. Benny recalls: "When we were recording 'Does Your Mother Know' I had just bought this wonderful Yamaha, the last great analogue synthesizer, a huge dream machine. There were 24 tiny knobs and you would take a miniature screwdriver, turning each screw until a green light came on and then you knew you had the right parameters. One of the sounds we created on the Yamaha was the one we used for the opening of 'Does Your Mother Know', which is a very short, dark, distinctive, wet, wonderful sound. The keyboard was really expensive, it cost 400,000 Swedish krone which was a lot of money for a synthesizer, but I think it paid for itself just with that one sound, which was different from any other sound that had been heard before." Does Your Mother Know was released as the launch single with the album Voulez-Vous on April 23 1979. Top 10 positions were: Australia 7, Belgium 1, Canada 8, Ireland 3, Switzerland 6, Holland 4, UK 4 (250,000 sales in 1st week), West Germany 10, Zimbabwe 9. It reached #19 in USA.
