1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback KK No. 1347, 820-S Engine One of only 162 sold in Black Jade, this 1969 Boss 429 with just 20,412 miles showing on the odometer and boasting the vaunted 820-S NASCAR engine is the result of an extensive seven-year restoration to factory condition by Marc Greeley. Documented by its VIN, 9F02Z159788, with the all-important “Z” as the fifth digit engine code, along with its KK 1347 sticker on the driver’s door jamb, the rare Boss 429 represents the pinnacle of Ford’s late 1960s Total Performance campaign as a Mustang that was created and built to contribute to the company’s lofty muscle car and racing aspirations. The Boss 429 Mustang was born from Ford’s desire to legalize a new hemi-head 429 engine to compete with Chrysler’s 426 Hemi in NASCAR competition. Because the powerplant was too wide for the Mustang engine compartment, Ford enlisted its in-house performance shop, Kar Kraft, to handle the engine installation, which also included narrowing the shock towers and many other modifications, like the Mustang’s first-time use of Goodyear F60x15 Polyglas tires and a rear sway bar. With the Boss 429’s 375 HP on tap, the package also incorporated heavy-duty items including the Toploader 4-speed transmission, 9-inch rear axle with 3.91 gears in a Traction-Lok differential, Competition Suspension with staggered rear shocks, and extra bracing for the shock towers. Power steering, power front disc brakes, a trunk-mounted battery, color-keyed racing mirrors, the Visibility Group and the black Deluxe Interior Décor Group with high-back bucket seats and console were also standard equipment. Every Boss 429 received a unique decal on the driver’s door with its “KK NASCAR 429” serial number. Externally, the Boss 429 was tame compared to its muscle car competition; only the large functional hood scoop, front spoiler and small fender decals differentiated the Boss 429 from the base 6-cylinder fastback.
