If you have never used a treadle sewing machine before, here are some tips to help you get started. Make sure the wheel turns in the right direction, so start the wheel with your hand, feel the motion with your feet, and start treadling to keep the movement going. Stop the wheel with your hand when you want to stop sewing, and keep your feet perfectly still to prevent the wheel from moving. If the wheel turns in the wrong direction when you are sewing it will snag the stitch and break the cotton. If the machine has a reverse setting the wheel will still turn in the same direction. This machine was manufactured in 1913 by Bernhard Stoewer in Stettin, northern Germany (now Szczecin, Poland).
