This engine is out of my 1982 Mercedes 300SD and was sold to me "as a good car just a little low on compression and smokes a little, may need new valve stem seals." but if you have worked on diesels or basically any engine, the valve stem seals will not cause all that much smoke or make the engine low on compression. So long story short it seemed like the owner didn't know much about cars and the knocking noise sounded like bad injectors which would also cause smoking. Bad news for me, it's not bad injectors. Official cause of seizing: the turbo went bad pumped all the oil out got ran without oil started knocking lost a rod and kept running as a 4 cylinder until the rod fell down and jammed on the crank. the hole in the block has been there for a long time because grease built up in cracks and edges of the hole. Have a great day!
