This thrilling period drama follows four brothers whose father was forced to commit seppuku by a feudal lord, and whose second brother was brutally murdered. Each installment intertwines their individual stories as they rise up to take revenge. While the story follows a classic jidaigeki theme of good versus evil, the tone is distinctly hard-boiled and imbued with Ishihara Pro’s signature style-especially with villain roles played by Hiroshi Tachi in the first film, and Masaki Kanda appearing in both the second and third. ▶︎Synopsis Bizen - the Miyagawa domain, valued at 30,000 koku. When Kakashi Hanbei (Tetsuya Watari) set foot in this land, the castle town was in turmoil. Under the pretense of mishandling a peasant uprising, the domain had been sentenced by the shogunate to abolition of its house name and confiscation of its territory. The feudal lord, Tanba-no-kami (Kenichi Kaneda), had fled to Nakatsu in Kyushu. Amidst the chaos, Hanbei is hired as a bodyguard by the chief retainer, Goto Hyoue (Akira Hamada). Soon after, Hanbei is confronted by a domain samurai, Jounoshin Kosugi (Masaki Kanda), who was sent to kill Hyoue. With no other choice, Hanbei kills Jounoshin. In his final moments, Jounoshin entrusts Hanbei with the care of his wife Yaé (Kumiko Akiyoshi) and their son Jotarō (Toshiyuki Amagasa), before passing away. Meanwhile, Araï Buzzaemon (Yosuke Kondō), the official inspector sent by the shogunate to oversee the domain’s handover, is furious to find the domain’s treasury completely empty.
