The Thomas E. Golden, Jr. Fellowship in Faith and Science welcomes Rev. Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco, O.P., Ph.D., S.T.D. Biomedicine and Beatitude: Catholic Bioethics and Genome Editing with CRISPR. Fr. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P., is Professor of Biology and of Theology at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from M.I.T. where he was a fellow of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He completed his Pontifical Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. His NIH-funded laboratory at Providence College is currently investigating the genetics of programmed cell death using the yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans, as model organisms. His first book, Biomedicine and Beatitude: An Introduction to Catholic Bioethics, was published by the Catholic University of America Press in 2011 and named a 2012 Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine (American Library Assn.).
