The Los Angeles Chargers have started the 2023 NFL season 0-2 after giving up a combined 63 points against the Dolphins and Titans, raising questions about defensive head coach Brandon Staley. In todays video of MTS Mike Talks Sports, I detail the coaching history of Brandon Staley, all of his past successes and failures, along with his time as the Chargers head coach in order to determine: Should the Los Angeles Chargers fire head coach Brandon Staley? Brandon got his NFL coaching opportunity under Vic Fangio with the Chicago Bears as an outside linebacker coach in 2017. After a poor defensive season from the Bears, Staley was let go of. In 2019, Fangio was hired to be the Denver Broncos head coach, where Staley got another opportunity to be the teams outside linebacker. Vic’s cover 4 quarters heavy Fangio scheme took the NFL by storm, playing well against great quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, which led other NFL teams to hire Fangio protégés in hopes to replicate his scheme. In 2020, the LA Rams hired Brandon Staley to be their defensive coordinator where he saw a significant amount of success, leading the team to a great defense and a defensive player of the year season by Aaron Donald. After the season, Brandon was hired to be the Chargers head coach, where in two years he’s gone 9-7 and 10-7 with no playoff wins. In his time with the Chargers, Brandon’s defense has been outright horrible, especially considering the defensive personnel he’s worked with. In week 18 of the NFL season in a win or go home game against the Raiders, the Chargers and Staley lost the game in head coaching controversy, and in 2022 Staley and the Chargers went up 27-0 in the wildcard round of the playoffs against the Jaguars, where they went on to choke the game away 31-30 in the 3rd largest playoff comeback in NFL history.
